How to prevent the most common threats

Many of the leading causes of death in men can be prevented. Next, we explain what you need to know to have a longer and healthier life.

Do you know what the main threats to men's health are? The list is surprisingly short. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the leading causes of death among adult men in the US. UU. they are heart disease, cancer, accidental injuries, chronic lower respiratory disease and strokes. The good thing is that with some lifestyle changes you can significantly reduce the risk of these frequent causes of death.

Start by analyzing your lifestyle

Take charge of your health by choosing a better lifestyle. For example:

  • Do not smoke. If you smoke or consume other tobacco products, ask the doctor to help you quit. Avoid exposure to secondhand smoke, air pollution and chemicals, such as those found in the workplace.

  • Follow a healthy diet. Choose to consume vegetables, fruits, whole grains, high fiber foods and lean sources of protein, such as fish. Limit foods high in saturated fat and sodium.

  • Maintain a healthy weight. Lowering the extra pounds - and not raising them again - can reduce the risk of heart disease, as well as several types of cancer.

  • Get moving. Can exercise help you control weight, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, and possibly decrease the risk of having certain types of cancer? Choose activities you enjoy, such as playing tennis or basketball, or walking briskly. All types of physical activity are beneficial to health.

  • Limit alcohol consumption. If you choose to drink alcohol, do so only in moderation. In the case of men under 65, this means up to two drinks per day, and in the case of the elderly, one. Some examples of the equivalent of a drink are 12 liquid ounces (355 ml) of beer, 5 liquid ounces (148 ml) of wine or 1.5 liquid ounces (44 ml) of liquor with a 40 percent alcoholic strength. The risk of suffering from different types of cancer, such as liver cancer, seems to increase with the amount of alcohol you consume and the period during which you have been drinking regularly. Drinking too much alcohol can also increase blood pressure.

  • Manage stress If you constantly feel at the limit or under pressure, this may have an impact on your lifestyle, as well as the immune system. Take steps to reduce stress or learn to manage stress in a healthy way.

Stop avoiding the doctor

Do not expect to have a serious problem to visit the doctor. The doctor can be your best ally to prevent health problems. If you have health problems, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure or diabetes, follow the treatment recommendations that the doctor told you. Also, check with your doctor when you should get screened for cancer, get vaccinated and undergo other health assessments.

What else puts you at risk?

Car accidents are another frequent cause of death among men. To travel safely on the road, wear a seat belt. Respect the speed limit. Do not drive a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or other substances, or when you feel sleepy.

Suicide is another of the most important health risks in men. An important risk factor for suicide among men is depression. If you have signs and symptoms of depression - such as feeling sad or worthless, and losing interest in everyday activities - talk to your doctor. There are treatments available. If you think about suicide, seek emergency medical assistance or go to the nearest emergency room.

In summary

Identifying health risks is one thing. Taking measures to reduce risks is another. Start by choosing a healthy lifestyle. The impact could be bigger than you imagine.
